Program Today:

Doug Risser from the Elkhart Rotary Club and his wife Sharon Risser from Goshen Club came to talk with us today about their trip to Costa Rica. They also had with them Steve and Jane Johnson who also went on the trip. During their trip they were working with peace corps volunteers on a project called "Give a Book". Carl Dickerson would help in getting the books into Costa Rica. Most of the books were in Spanish but they did have some entry level English books. It took $600.00 to start a library of 200 books. The Goshen Rotary Club raised enough money for 25 libraries. One thing that they noticed on their trip was that reading out loud to the children was not common among the culture. When they would go to a school to donate the books they would read aloud to the children to not only model to the parents and teachers but also about the importance of reading out loud. They found by doing this the children really enjoyed it.  While on the trip there was an eye clinic that was taking place. In 3 days they were able to see 600 people. They were able to give 45 pairs of just reading glasses and there were 297 pairs of glasses given that needed a certain prescription. They clients were able to choose from 6 different frames. There is an eye doctor who will fit the exact prescription that is needed that works with the eye clinic program. The Goshen Rotary Club raised 3,000 to help cover some of the cost for the prescriptions through their happy dollars. Doug, Sharon, Steve, and Jane all recommended that if our very own rotary club is looking for a service project that we look into this one.
