Program Today:

Kris Reiff was our program today. She was telling us about her journey with practicing yoga. Since retirement she has started teaching yoga and right now she is in the process of becoming a registered yoga teacher. Currently she is teaching a group of ladies who are in the age range of 55+. Yoga is great with maintaining flexibility and balance. The Elkhart Rotary funded a yoga class on Saturday mornings at what is now the Wellfield Botanic Gardens. Kris started attending class there. It was considered a community class that only cost $5.00 dollars. Kris also mentioned that yoga has helped her when it comes to dealing with different stressors in her life.

Yoga has been around for 5,000 years. A lot of the different names of the poses and the teachings of yoga are all in transcript. In the United States, the tradition of yoga has barely been around for 100 years. Kris mentioned that there are other types of yoga practices out there such as; Hatha, Vinyasa, and Hot yoga to just name a few. Currently Kris is taking a 25 week course in Fort Wayne to become an instructor. There are three different levels to being an instructor. Level one is you have 200 hours of teaching, level two 300 hours and level three is 500 hours plus, you are considered a master. She did mention that there are no laws that state you have to have a certified license to teach yoga. There is a yoga alliance where they have rules/guidelines on what people need to follow if they would like to become a yoga instructor.
