September 30th is the District Foundation Dinner at the Learner in downtown Elkhart.
Program Today:
Steve Van Scoik introduced our guest speaker today, Kurt Janowsky. He informed us a little bit on the business side of the Learner and his catering companies. They have 10 operations total. Fidler on the Roof was the first broadway play that was at the Learner. He referred to the Learner as a rental house. Which means that the city owns and manages the building, the building can then be rented out to promoters and then the promoter promotes the show and sells tickets. The way in which the theater makes any revenue is by charging a box office fee, rental fee, and by selling concession stand items at the events. Kurt did mention there are less "free" shows unlike in the past. He also mentioned a program called Friends of the Learner. Through this program it gives them the opportunity to book their own shows and event rather than going through a promoter.
