Program Today:

Our very own Andrew Hicks was our program speaker today. He came and spoke to us on civil lawsuits. He mentioned that a lawsuit is like a play or a football game. Stage 1 lays the ground work. Stage 2 is where you try to find essence of the case. Stage 3 is where you act once you have all the facts and stage 4 or the final is the business of collecting. Andrew also mentioned that every judge is different. Some like you to stand while in court and be  formal like you are taught in school and others like you to stay seated for various reasons. During civil cases you have to request a jury but you may not always get one. He also stated that there are two types of jurisdiction. General and supplemental. He also said that a summons is a notice from the court on how long you have to respond and a complaint is just a document putting claims on notice and must meet a certain requirement.
